Kinja'd!!!

M635CSi for your time.

Why do so many “private party” cars on the Denver Craigslist have temporary plates?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

My brother is interested in this Tiburon, but it has a paper temporary plate on the back and an Arapahoe Hyundai plate up front. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this, it seems to be all over. My initial reaction is that these are curbstoners, but I don’t really know.

Maybe people who bought them and immediately hated them because people don’t test drive their purchases enough?

I generally don’t give Craigslist sellers the benefit of the doubt.

So should we avoid cars with temporary plates?

As you shouldn’t

Depends on if you want weed growers (who need to find creative alternatives to the banking system) to succeed.

Cause in Denver, 25% of cars have resident plates, 25% have fleet plates, and 50% have temp tags.

So as long as it’s a reasonable deal, it just comes down to whether or not we mind doing business with Colorado’s weed industry?

Found it

I honestly don’t know, they are probably just flipping the vehicle. Since the state moved to the new type of temp plates it seems like there are more of them on the road. I probably just didn’t notice the ones taped to the back windows as much.

That’s my guess. I suppose if it has a temp plate, it is registered in their name though. Right? It’s not like a curbstoner that intentionally doesn’t register it so they don’t have to get a dealer license?

As far as I know, that’s the case. Wouldn’t carfax know if it had been registered recently or not?

That’s a good point.

Curbstoners

But curbstoners don’t register the car in their name, so they wouldn’t have temp plates, right?

You could grab one from the dealership and just attach it. The ad you show doesn’t actually show a temp tag. Just something where the rear tag would go. Whatever is there is to faded out to say it is a temp tag.

That’s just one example though. Several other ads had the temp plate clearly visible.

My usual first thought is failed emissions but in this case if it was purchased from arapahoe Hyundai they would have to make it pass I believe.
